Say cheers! if you want to make it past 90 – because drinking a couple of glasses of wine a night could well make you live longer.
According to interviews with members of The 90+ Study, the oldest demographic group in the US, over what habits give quantity as well as quality of life having a bit of what you fancy does you good!
Researchers at the Clinic for Aging Research and Education in Laguna Woods, California, focused on what food, activities and lifestyles featured among those living longer.
Analysing the responses of more than 1,600 nonagenarians, the study results showed that people who drank two glasses of beer or wine a day improved their odds of living 18 per cent longer than those who refrained from alcohol.
Dr Claudia Kawas, a neurology specialist and head of the 90+ Study at the University of California, presented her findings at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference in Austin, Texas.
“I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity,” she said.
Exercising regularly and enjoying a hobby for two hours a day were also linked to living longer.
Another surprise is that people who were overweight in their 70s tended to live longer than underweight people.
“It’s not bad to be skinny when you’re young, but it’s very bad to be skinny when you’re old,” Dr Kawas said at the meeting.
