Which bright spark did this then?
A reader sent this photograph of one of the most shocking bits of D-I-Y shower fitting we at the consumerwatchfoundation.com can honestly say we’ve ever seen …
And to make it all the worse, the work had been carried out in the bathroom of a rented house in the Midlands.
It was spotted by a student who attends Britain’s leading construction colleges, Engineering Real Results, based in Cambridge.
He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the sockets on the wall INSIDE the shower cubicle and the exposed wire … it goes against everything we are being taught. It is incredibly dangerous and is exactly why you need a qualified plumber to do your work like this.”
Sadly, the UK makes it very difficult for people to become qualified to work in the construction industry.
To comply with Government rules apprentices are made to carry out 100 hours practical training. It means that many of them end up walking the streets ‘begging’ companies to allow them to work for them for nothing. Few building firms can help because of insurance issues.
Now, Engineering Real Results have introduced a scheme to beat the legislation and their students can complete their qualifications to NVQ level in as little as six weeks rather than years.
Engineering Real Results has been buying up neglected and derelict properties in a multi-million pound move giving tradespeople of all ages a way round the restrictive Government legislation.
The scheme is being supported by celebrity builder Tommy Walsh.
A spokesman for the company said: “We need to be incredibly careful around water and electricity. That is why bathrooms have special electrical outputs.
“If you have a water leak in your house you should be concerned not just because of the structural damage it may be doing but also because it may come into contact with the electrical supply.”
